It's possible that your diet/hydration are impacting your balance
Water Intake
Dehydration can negatively impact postural stability by reducing the volume of fluid in the body, particularly in the inner ear and joints, which are important for balance control. This can lead to dizziness, lightheadedness, and difficulty maintaining proper body alignment, leading to an increased risk of falls and decreased stability. Additionally, dehydration can also negatively impact cognitive function, which can further compromise stability by reducing reaction time and the ability to make quick adjustments to maintain balance.
You might find yourself not drinking water to avoid going to the bathroom but this is hurting you and your balance twice as much. By drinking enough water and going to the bathroom you are actually activating your balance system at the same time. Think about it - you do half a squat when you get up, then you move as you walk to the bathroom, then there is another half squat, and then you have to get back to where you were before. This act stimulates your muscles, feet, and vestibular system. If you find it difficult to make sure you’ve had enough water for the day, we recommend buying a water bottle with written-on visual reminders or adding a reminder to your smartphone.
Diet
As for diet, it usually isn’t the immediate cause or root of poor balance. Many nutrients, including vitamins and minerals, are essential for muscle and nerve function, which are crucial for balance control. An unhealthy diet can lead to more serious issues that definitely impact balance.
It is important to note that these relationships are complex and that more research is needed to fully understand the impact of diet on postural stability. Keep a log for yourself and see what you learn. Ensuring you get your daily water intake and enough food will help your health overall.
